Somehow, it's hard for me to have much sympathy for this guy. . .

Seems pretty obvious to me that jumping off a 2000 foot TV tower is a bad idea.

Great use of public lands and services.

Firefighters work to rescue base jumper

WALNUT GROVE -- Elk Grove firefighters late Thursday night continued to work on rescuing a man who became trapped on a 2,000-foot television tower in this south Sacramento County town after attempting to base jump from the structure.

The man, whose identity was not known, called 911 around 7 p.m. after his parachute became entangled in support wires for the tower about 200 feet above ground. Authorities said the man might have broken his arms in the accident.
Elk Grove Deputy Fire Chief Phil Davis said the plan was to have firefighters shimmy up the support wires to reach the man. He was uncertain how long that rescue attempt would take. "He's still moving around a bit," Davis said of the man.

The Walnut Grove Volunteer Fire Department and the Sacramento Fire Department also responded to the rescue call.

Base jumping -- which stands for building, antenna, span and earth -- is an increasingly popular extreme sport. But it has also been marked by accidents when untrained or inadequately prepared jumpers failed to release their parachutes.
